The Slovenian Study of Parental Monitoring and Adolescent Delinquency (SPMAD)

The Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security, University of Maribor, Slovenia (www.fvv.uni-mb.si/en) became involved with PADS+ in 2009. Research members are Professor Gorazd Meško, Professor Peter Umek, Professor Matevž Bren, and PhD student Eva Bertok. The Slovenian study, named SPMAD (Study of Parental Monitoring and Adolescent Delinquency) is a cross-sectional study, which is applying PADS+ methodology to a sample of adolescents in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Data collection for the SPMAD study is planned for spring 2011.


Gorazd MeskoProfessor Gorazd Meško is Professor of Criminology and Dean of the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security, University of Maribor, Slovenia. He is currently Editor-in-chief of the Slovenian Journal of Criminal Investigation and Criminology. He has also been involved in the development of doctoral studies in criminal justice, criminology and security studies. Gorazd Meško has recently published articles and book chapters on fear of crime, legitimacy in criminal justice, and policing. He has been involved in research projects on violence (Daphne – Stalking and Prevention of youth violence) and crime prevention (CRIMPREV) to which he contributed two edited books on Crime and the Media (2009, with Tom Cockcroft, Adam Crawford and Andre Lemaitre), and Criminal Policy, Crime Prevention and Crime Control (2009, with Helmut Kury).

Peter Umek

Peter UmekProfessor Peter Umek is Professor of Psychology at the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security. His pedagogic and research scope includes the areas of police psychology, forensic psychology, and criminal/ investigative psychology. He is Head of the Institute of Criminal Justice and Security, Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security. He was Head of national research projects in Slovene on Methods of preventing and reducing drug abuse problems in primary schools, secondary schools and vocational education (1999 – 2002), and Analysis of the Slovenian school system regarding to problems of violence and drug abuse (2005-2008), as well as The ESS Project - Professional training for professionals in education and training in social and civic competences (2008-2010), where he was Head of the identification and prevention of violence working group.

Matevž Bren

Matevz BrenProfessor Matevž Bren is Professor of Statistics and Methodology at the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security, University of Maribor, and researcher at the Institute of Mathematics, Physics and Mechanics, Slovenia. He is Head of the Department for Social and Human Studies. Professor Bren is author and co-author of numerous research papers, book chapters, and SW packages. His publications hold more than 40 independent citations in the WoS. He is Head of the Slovene section of the European research project: Establishing a knowledge-base for quality in education: Testing a dynamic theory of educational effectiveness, ESF - ECRP 2008 No. 500. Professor Bren's main research interests are dissimilarity measures, compositional data analysis, system dynamics, distance education, and school effectiveness.

Eva Bertok

Eva BertokEva Bertok has a BA in Communication Science from the University of Ljubljana. She is a doctoral student at the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security, University of Maribor. Her research focuses on juvenile delinquency, specifically the relationship between parental monitoring and delinquency. From 2008 to 2010, she cooperated on The ESS Project - Professional training for professionals in education and training in social and civic competences (orig. Projekt ESS - Profesionalno usposabljanje strokovnih delavcev v vzgoji in izobraževanju na področju socialnih in državljanskih kompetenc) with lectures on juvenile delinquency and violence in media.
